Église Saint-Pierre de Gex, Catholic church in Gex, France

The église Saint-Pierre de Gex is a Catholic church from the 19th century standing in the center of Gex, in eastern France. Inside, stone walls frame rows of wooden pews, a decorated altar, and stained glass windows that fill the nave with color.

The church was built in the 19th century and went through a major restoration between 1954 and 1970 that kept the structure sound. Since then, it has remained in continuous use by the parish without major interruption.

The parish bears the name of Saint Peter, and the church's bells mark the hours over the town centre. The building also serves as a concert venue: the municipality of Gex financed the replacement of the ageing organ with a second-hand instrument from Geroldswil in the canton of Zurich, and the lower section of the old organ was kept so the rose window behind it stays visible from the nave.

The church is easy to reach on foot from anywhere in the center of Gex. Going outside of service times lets you walk around the interior freely and spend time looking at the details without any rush.

The aging organ is being replaced by a second-hand instrument from Geroldswil, in the canton of Zurich in Switzerland, with the full cost covered by the municipality of Gex. Rather than removing the old organ entirely, its lower section stays in place so that the rose window behind it can still be seen from the nave.
