Château du Pineau, Historical castle in Bellevigne-en-Layon, France

Château du Pineau stands in Champ-sur-Layon, in Maine-et-Loire. The present building was rebuilt from 1844 to 1872 by architect René Hodé for Charles Delaunay; only the two round towers survive from the older castle. The light-coloured facade is roughly symmetrical, with a taller central block under a steep grey roof with dormers and small turrets, lower crenellated wings, and end pavilions with chimneys, the right one carrying a corner turret.

The seigneurie du Pineau belonged to the du Pineau family until 1543, then passed by marriage to the de l'Esperonnière family; in 1678 it went to the des Herbiers de l'Estanduère and in 1705 was sold to Henri du Mesnil d'Aussigné. In the 17th century the castle had towers, pavilions, a drawbridge, batteries, moats and a chapel. Burned during the Revolution and the Vendée War, it was rebuilt from 1844 to 1872 by architect René Hodé for Charles Delaunay, mayor of Champ-sur-Layon; only the two round towers survive from the old castle.

The estate is also called Pineau-Gilbourg, and the seigneurie belonged to the du Pineau family until 1543, passing by marriage to the de l'Esperonnière family. The chapel was rebuilt in 1850–1852 after the old one was destroyed; the two surviving round towers are the only remnants of the pre-Revolution castle.

The château stands in Champ-sur-Layon, in the Bellevigne-en-Layon commune of Maine-et-Loire. The estate is private property, so visits focus on the exterior: the light-coloured facade with its central block, crenellated wings and corner turret, seen from beyond the low stone wall along the road.

Only the two round towers survive from the pre-Revolutionary castle, which in the 17th century also had a drawbridge, moats, batteries and a chapel. The rest of what stands today, including the chapel of 1850-1852, was rebuilt between 1844 and 1872 by architect René Hodé for Charles Delaunay, mayor of Champ-sur-Layon.
