The Bibliothèque de l'université et de la Société industrielle de Mulhouse (BUSIM) occupies the second floor of the Fonderie, a former industrial building of the Société alsacienne de constructions mécaniques on the Mulhouse campus. The reading room has a glossy red carpet, white curved arches across the ceiling with long fluorescent lights, tall narrow windows with dark frames along one wall, and lime-green molded plastic chairs around gray-topped tables. A low white bookshelf holds rows of colorful book spines.

The facility was founded in 1986 from a partnership between the local university and the industry association to support education and professional development. This collaboration between academic and industrial circles has shaped the library's focus up to today.

The library's roots lie in the Société industrielle de Mulhouse, founded on 24 December 1825, whose statutes required a library of works on mechanical and chemical arts. Its heritage sections still follow the association's committees: chemistry, mechanics, commerce, fine arts, natural history, textiles, railways, patents and numismatics. The first librarian, geologist Joseph Kœchlin-Schlumberger, left his research library of about 400 documents.

Access to the collection happens through a digital catalog at scd.uha.fr, where users can search for both physical materials and electronic resources. Visitors should check the website to understand which services are available for different types of users.

The library's oldest holdings were split when it moved in 2010: the Armand Weiss bequest of some 4,500 volumes and a literary collection of 1,300 volumes went on deposit to the Mulhouse municipal library, while science, technology and fine-arts collections came to the Fonderie. Since February 2015 the Pôle Documentaire de la Fonderie has highlighted one "Trésor du mois" from a partner institution each month.
