Basilique Notre-Dame d'Espérance de Saint-Brieuc, basilica located in Côtes-d'Armor, in France
The basilique Notre-Dame d'Espérance de Saint-Brieuc is a church built in Gothic Revival style, standing prominently on a rocky hill in the city. The building features a long nave with side aisles, tall windows, painted vaults depicting religious scenes, and is constructed from gray granite with decorative elements of softer stone.
The site originated from an older church dating to the 14th century, rebuilt in the 16th century and renewed in 1719 as a Chapel of the Immaculate Conception. Growing devotion to Our Lady of Hope in the 19th century led to construction of the present larger basilica beginning in 1856.
The basilica occupies a central place in the city's spiritual life, reflecting the community's devotion to the Virgin Mary. Visitors can see how local people use this space for personal prayer and gathering, making it a living center of faith and local identity.
The building sits on a hillside and is easily visible and accessible on foot from the city center. Note that the basilica is currently closed for repairs, so visitors should check opening dates in advance before planning a visit.
An old crypt beneath the church was opened in 1846 and originally held relics including the veil of the Virgin Mary that pilgrims visited on special days. This underground chamber was carved into the rock on which the basilica stands.
