Abbey of Saint-Remi
Abbey of Saint-Remi, Medieval abbey in Reims, France
The Abbey of Saint-Remi in Reims is a large former monastery with Romanesque architecture, barrel vaults, and colored glass windows. The building now houses a museum displaying medieval objects such as tapestries, stone capitals, furniture, and jewelry from different periods.
The monastery began around the year 300 and grew in importance when the relics of Saint Remigius arrived in 553. It became a burial place for French kings and held major religious significance throughout the medieval period.
The place takes its name from Saint Remigius, who brought Christianity to Reims in the 5th century, and pilgrims came here in the Middle Ages to venerate his relics. The site became a destination for those seeking spiritual connection to the saint's memory.
The site is easy to reach on foot and well marked, with plenty of space to explore the buildings and grounds. The best time to visit is outside peak tourist hours so you can view the collections at your own pace.
The church holds an 18th-century organ that continues to be played during religious services and music performances, offering a distinctive sound. This instrument is a lesser-known musical treasure that many visitors overlook despite its fine craftsmanship and historical value.
