Île Aucard, River island in Tours, France
île Aucard is a river island in the Loire at Tours, featuring sports fields and grass areas. It extends in an elongated shape and provides space for various recreational activities.
The island served as cattle grazing land in the 17th century under Louis Aucard, from whom it took its name. This was long before its later use as a recreation area.
Locals use this space primarily for regular sports activities and outdoor recreation throughout the year. The green areas form part of the everyday leisure life of the city.
The best time to visit is during dry seasons when the paths are easy to walk. Access is via a suspension bridge that is easy to reach from the city edge.
A historic water pumping station from 1933 sits on the island and still supplies drinking water to the city. This technical facility is a quiet relic from early industrialization.
