Château de Régennes, Medieval castle in Appoigny, France.

The Château de Régennes stands on a curve of the Yonne River, surrounded by agricultural lands in the Burgundy region of France.

The bishops of Auxerre built this fortress in the 12th century to control river navigation and protect trade routes between Auxerre and Paris.

The castle represents medieval defensive architecture, later modified in the 18th century according to architect Claude-Louis d'Aviler's designs.

The current building, reconstructed between the two world wars, now operates as a medical clinic accessible from the city of Auxerre.

The castle controlled a river passage critical for wood transportation from Nivernais to Paris through the Yonne River system.
