Église Notre-Dame du Marthuret

Église Notre-Dame du Marthuret, Gothic church in Riom, France

The Église Notre-Dame du Marthuret is a Gothic church in Riom built with solid stone featuring a single nave flanked by side aisles and chapels throughout. The building showcases ornate flamboyant Gothic details that define its architectural character.

The church was built in the 13th century and required rebuilding after a fire in 1308 damaged the structure. Major renovations followed between 1823 and 1856, directed by architect Aymon Mallay.

The name Marthuret comes from "martyrium," referring to an ancient burial ground that once occupied this site. The church honors Virgin Mary veneration, which held deep meaning in the local religious life of the region.

The church sits in the commercial district of Riom, making it easy to reach while exploring the city center. Its location along local streets puts it within walking distance of shops and public spaces.

The organ was crafted in 1838 by the Callinet brothers and brings a distinctive musical presence to the church. This instrument represents skilled craftsmanship of its era and contributes significantly to the acoustic character of the interior.
