Sommet du Colombier, Alpine summit in Jura Mountains, France
Sommet du Colombier is an Alpine peak in the Jura Mountains rising to around 1,900 meters. Its slopes showcase mountain meadows dotted with wildflowers and alpine plants.
A metal cross has crowned the summit since 1906 after replacing an earlier wooden marker. The structure underwent renewal following a storm that damaged the peak decades later.
The summit serves as a stage finish for the Tour de France, making it a landmark in professional cycling events. Riders test their strength here as the race passes through these mountains regularly.
Mountain roads close from November through mid-April, so plan visits during warmer months. Bring your own water supply since natural sources are not available on the summit.
An orientation table at the summit helps visitors identify surrounding peaks and lakes from this vantage point. The table makes it possible to spot Mont Blanc and the waters of Bourget, Annecy, and Geneva in the distance.
