Rocher Tourte, Mountain summit in Massif Central, France
Rocher Tourte is a mountain summit in the Massif Central rising to about 1,535 meters with dramatic vertical cliffs as its defining feature. The peak stands as one of the most prominent elevations within the Mezenc range.
The mountain has a long naming history stretching back to the 12th century with various designations across the ages. Its current name, Rocher Tourte, became established in the middle of the 19th century.
The summit is part of a protected natural area preserving geological formations typical of the French Massif Central. Visitors can experience the characteristic landscape of this region firsthand here.
A marked hiking trail of about 16 kilometers begins from the village of Les Estables with yellow markers guiding the way. The hike takes roughly 6 hours and requires good fitness and proper footwear.
The mountain is composed of phonolite, a volcanic rock rare to the region and geologically distinctive. At the same time, the summit serves as nesting grounds for golden eagles and peregrine falcons, which can be regularly spotted in the air above.
