Puy d'Aubassin, Volcanic summit in Auvergne, France
Puy d'Aubassin is a volcanic peak in the Chaîne des Puys region that rises to roughly 700 meters (2,300 feet). Its slopes display distinct volcanic features including crater cones and lava formations that reveal the geological history of the area.
The peak formed approximately 10,000 years ago through volcanic activity, making it one of the youngest structures in the Chaîne des Puys. During Roman times, traders and settlers used paths across the landscape to connect communities through this volcanic region.
The name derives from local words meaning peak and a nearby settlement, reflecting how communities have long identified landmarks through geography. Visitors today experience the site as a link to how people have always lived with these volcanic formations.
Multiple marked trails lead to the summit, with some routes providing access to crater features and lava fields. The climb is moderate, but sturdy footwear and care on uneven ground are advisable.
Visitors can find on the summit a small crater formation that resembles a bird's nest, earning it the local name "Nid de la Poule". This distinctive feature, though easy to overlook, remains one of the most striking details on the peak.
