The Hautes Chaumes reaches an elevation of 913 meters and features high-altitude meadows exposed to constant winds and annual precipitation exceeding 2000 millimeters.

During the Middle Ages, regional abbey monks cleared the beech forest to create grazing areas, transforming the landscape into heathlands and grasslands.

Local pastoral traditions maintain the open landscapes through seasonal grazing of herds that help preserve the characteristic vegetation.

The network of marked trails allows hikers to reach the summit from several starting points, with parking areas located along route D430.

The peatlands present on the site contain specific plant species such as the Vosges pansy, a flower found only in this region.
