Le Coulet Gras, Mountain summit in Alpes de Haute Provence, France.

Le Coulet Gras is a mountain summit in the Alpes de Haute Provence that rises to about 1,200 meters (3,900 ft). Marked trails from nearby villages lead to the top, where views stretch across the surrounding valleys.

This summit has served as a landmark for mountain people and their herds for many centuries. Its geological structure took shape over millions of years and continues to define the landscape of the region.

Nearby mountain communities have shaped the slopes through generations of seasonal grazing with their herds. You can still see signs of these pastoral traditions in how the land is used and managed throughout the year.

The best time to hike is from May through September when the trails are clearer and snow has melted. Start your hike early in the day to make use of daylight and benefit from cooler morning temperatures.

Natural rock shelters and protected crevices at the base of the summit have long been used by shepherds as refuge during summer months. These geological formations have provided practical refuge for both herds and travelers across centuries.
