Prieuré Saint-Léonard de l’Île-Bouchard

The priory is a Romanesque church standing on the left bank of the Vienne River with a choir, main apse, three smaller apses, and an ambulatory lined with five columns. The interior displays the typical medieval building style with arches and pillars that divide the spaces clearly.

The priory was established in the early 12th century as a dependent site of Notre-Dame de Déols Abbey and served as a religious center in the region for centuries. After destruction during religious conflicts and later sale as state property, it underwent complete restoration in the late 20th century.

The carved capitals throughout the priory display religious scenes from the lives of Jesus and Mary in fine detail. Walking through the arcaded columns of the ambulatory, visitors can observe these intricate stone carvings up close.

The priory is located on Rue de la Vallée aux Nains in L'Île-Bouchard and remains accessible to visitors. The site is compact enough to explore on foot and can be reached easily from the town center.

Archaeological digs at the site uncovered more than 30 burial locations, including stone coffins and graves with layers of charcoal used to preserve the bodies. These discoveries reveal how the place served as a burial ground and reflect medieval burial customs.
