Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Vélizy-Villacoublay, Modern Catholic church in Vélizy-Villacoublay, France.
The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste is a modern church in Vélizy-Villacoublay built with concrete architecture and two large concrete blades that form a 25-meter (82-foot) bell tower. The building features a double nave layout with expansive windows that flood the central altar with light and accommodate approximately 700 worshippers.
Construction of the church began in February 1970 to accommodate the growing population following aviation industry development in Villacoublay. The building emerged during a period of urban expansion driven by industrial growth in the area.
The church features abstract stained glass windows by François Chapuis created in 1983 and a ceramic wall mural by Katarzyna Pawliszewska-Lavocat at the base of the tower. These artistic works define the interior and give the space a contemporary artistic character.
The church is easy to spot from outside thanks to its distinctive concrete design with the two prominent vertical blades. Regular services take place throughout the week, and visitors can view the artistically decorated spaces during regular opening hours.
A retable depicting the baptism of Christ was created by Sister Claire Schmeltz and installed inside the church in 2019. This artistic work showcases the creative depth that enriches the modern building.
