Fontaine d'Orchaise, Cave entrance in Valencisse, France

The Fontaine d'Orchaise extends over 1,175 meters in length and features two distinct levels with an underground river flowing through its lower section.

First documented in 1682, the cave was initially used for extracting clay, known as terra sigillata, before becoming a water source for the village.

The cave entrance holds a central position in regional tales and folktales, with numerous stories passed down through generations about its water properties.

The entrance features a reservoir dam over 2 meters deep, constructed in the late 19th century to provide drinking water to Orchaise village.

The cave employed a hydraulic ram system to elevate water 60 meters above the source, using only natural water current energy.
