Plage de la Calanca, Coastal beach near Porto Pollo, Corsica

Plage de la Calanca is a beach on the Gulf of Valinco in Olmeto, southern Corsica, about 1,000 km southeast of Paris. The cove lies on the island of Corsica, where average temperatures run from 6 °C in January to 25 °C in July, with roughly 969 mm of rain a year.

A watchtower from the 16th century stands above the shoreline, reflecting the defensive measures needed against pirate raids that targeted Corsica's coasts. Such structures emerged to guard settlements from sea-based attacks.

The name Calanca comes from the Corsican word for a cove or inlet, describing the shape of the shoreline itself. The beach lies on the Gulf of Valinco below Olmeto, and the surrounding maquis and rocky slopes are typical of the island's southwest coast. Bathers reach it on foot from the Route de Porto Pollo.

Access comes through a marked path from the parking area on Route de Porto Pollo, where few facilities exist nearby. Visitors should bring their own supplies and wear sturdy shoes, as the trail can be rocky and uneven.

The position between two headlands creates conditions for watching both sunrise and sunset over water, a rare feature along this coastal region. This orientation makes the location special for photographers and nature enthusiasts.
