Abbatiale Saint-Geniès de Saint-Geniès-des-Mourgues, Romanesque abbey church in Saint-Geniès-des-Mourgues, France

The abbatiale Saint-Geniès de Saint-Geniès-des-Mourgues is a Romanesque abbey church standing in the village of the same name in southern France, with its oldest sections dating to the 11th century. The central nave features rounded arches typical of Romanesque construction, while the choir area shows pointed Gothic windows, and several side chapels display Baroque-influenced decoration.

The church was founded by Benedictine nuns who established a community here in the early 11th century, and it was expanded into its current form between 1316 and 1341. In the 17th century soldiers damaged the building, after which repairs were carried out, and in the 18th century the monastery was closed and merged with the abbey of Saint-Félix-de-Montceau before the Revolution dispersed what remained.

The name of the village, Saint-Geniès-des-Mourgues, comes from Saint Geniès and from the Occitan word "Mourgues", meaning nuns, a direct reference to the Benedictine women who once lived here. During the Heritage Days in September, the church opens its doors to the public, and autumn concerts are held inside the old walls, drawing people from the surrounding area.

The church sits at the center of Saint-Geniès-des-Mourgues on a small hill, making it easy to spot from the village streets. A visit pairs well with a walk through the surrounding old lanes and stone houses that make up the historic core of the village.

The first bell hung in the church tower was installed in the mid-17th century and still rings today. The tower itself was rebuilt in the 19th century and topped with a pointed iron spire, which still defines the silhouette of the village.
