La Myne, Community laboratory in Villeurbanne, France
La Myne is a community laboratory housed in a two-story residential building near the University of Lyon campus. The ground floor contains workshop areas for hands-on work, the upper level offers spaces for meetings and group projects, and a large garden extends the usable area for outdoor activities.
The Lyon metropolitan authority provided this space to the La Myne association in 2015 as a center for social and environmental innovation. Since then, the project has become an active hub for collaborative work on sustainability and community-focused solutions.
This space brings together people from technical, artistic, and scientific fields who work side by side on sustainability initiatives. Visitors see how professionals and enthusiasts share tools, knowledge, and workspace to create something new together.
The ground floor workshop areas are easy to access, while upper levels serve community gathering and work sessions. The outdoor garden provides comfortable space during warmer months and expands the possibilities for activities.
During the global health crisis, members rapidly produced and distributed large quantities of WHO-standard hand sanitizer to local social organizations. This practical response demonstrated how quickly the community could address urgent needs through collaborative action.
