The Jardin des Carmes d'Avignon is a terraced urban park laid out on the former grounds of a Carmelite monastery in Avignon. Stone steps and ramps link its different levels, and benches line the shaded walks. Beds of ornamental shrubs and flowering plants border the paths, separating the lawns and planted areas from one another.
The site originated as grounds belonging to a Carmelite monastery during the medieval period, shaping its current layout and organization. The design still reflects elements connected to its monastic past.
The garden takes its name from the Carmelite convent whose grounds it once was; after the Revolution the monastic property passed to the city and the former cloister garden became a public park. A visitor can still read the religious origin in the name and in the enclosed, terraced layout of the old convent grounds.
The park opens daily from sunrise to sunset and can be entered from multiple points around its perimeter. Walking paths are designed to accommodate visitors with mobility needs.
The garden preserves fragments of medieval stone walls that have been incorporated into its modern layout. These historic walls divide the space into sections, each showcasing different plant collections and landscaping approaches.
