Chapelle du château de Montépin, Chapel on a castle estate in Bâgé-Dommartin, France
The chapelle du château de Montépin is a small chapel set within the grounds of the Montépin estate in Bâgé-Dommartin, France. It has plain stone walls and a modest roof, sitting alongside the castle and a washhouse that were all built in the same period around 1885.
The Montépin estate has roots going back to medieval times, when the land passed through the hands of the Aymon family and was connected to the Knights Templar in the 13th century. The chapel itself dates from the late 19th century, built as part of a broader renovation of the whole property.
The chapel was part of daily life on the estate, serving both the castle's residents and nearby villagers as a place of worship. Its plain interior shows it was built for everyday prayer rather than ceremony or display.
The chapel and the castle are on private property, so the interior is not normally open to visitors. Walking around the outside of the grounds gives a good sense of the overall layout and the character of the estate.
Although the estate has medieval origins, the chapel was built at the same time as a working washhouse on the same grounds in the late 19th century. Having a place of worship and a place for laundry side by side on one estate is an unusual reminder of how different aspects of daily life once shared the same space.
