Château de Kerlarec

Château de Kerlarec, Medieval castle in Arzano, France

Château de Kerlarec is a stone fortification in Arzano constructed from granite and limestone, with a central block and corner pavilions connected by a wooden spiral staircase reaching the upper floors. The property later transformed into four separate residential units, with portions now serving as guest accommodations.

Charles Victor de Kerouallan purchased the estate in 1834 and demolished the existing buildings to construct the current structure between 1834 and 1840. This period marked a wave of castle rebuilding among French landowners seeking modern country residences.

The castle displays stained glass windows created by master glassmaker Jean-Baptiste Anglade, showing scenes from Joan of Arc's life. These artworks give the interior a special character shaped by medieval French history.

The estate today divides into four separate units, with some sections available as guest lodging. Keep in mind that not all areas of the castle are accessible to visitors, as portions remain private residences.

In the 19th century, the castle served as the center of a 200-hectare agricultural operation producing grains, cider, and animal feed using advanced methods for that era. This farming heritage reveals how wealthy estates functioned as major agricultural enterprises rather than purely residential properties.
