Ermitage Saint-Pierre de La Roque-Sainte-Marguerite

Ermitage Saint-Pierre sits on a rocky outcrop above the Dourbie Valley with a small chapel and multiple rooms carved into the stone. The complex spreads across several levels on the slope with worked structures and water storage systems.

The hermitage was founded in the early Middle Ages between the 9th and 10th centuries and appears in records from 1150. It remained occupied until the 14th century and had connections to Revel Castle.

The chapel shows features of religious architecture with a triumphal arch dividing the choir from the nave. This design reflects how medieval builders understood the layout of sacred spaces.

The path to the hermitage is narrow and cut into the rock, so you need good walking shoes and some confidence on steep terrain. The site is open and exposed, so check the weather and avoid visiting alone.

The site holds an ancient cistern carved from stone and several level surfaces suggesting a former hermit cemetery. These features show how monks managed water and burial in this isolated location.
