Vase de Chine

The Vase de Chine is a natural limestone column rising from the gorge walls, creating a distinctive silhouette against the mountainous landscape. This rock formation consists of solid limestone layers shaped by water erosion and weathering over countless ages.

This limestone formation emerged through millions of years of geological processes, as water erosion carved the deep valleys of the Jonte region. The same forces that shaped the surrounding gorge continuously refined this column into its distinctive shape.

The site represents a significant destination for international climbers, offering 17 routes that range from beginner level to expert challenges.

You can reach the rock formation via a marked hiking trail starting from Saint-Pierre-des-Tripiers, taking roughly twenty minutes on foot from the village. The access is straightforward, making this site easy to visit for most people.

This rock formation has an unusual shape that resembles a Chinese porcelain vase, setting it apart from other limestone columns in the region. This distinctive appearance developed because water and weather wore away the limestone layers at different rates.
