Maison des Vautours

Maison des Vautours is an observation center built into the cliff face of Gorges de la Jonte with viewing platforms on multiple levels. The three-story facility offers different vantage points to watch the birds that nest on the surrounding rock walls.

The center was established in the 1980s to address the severe decline of vulture populations in the Lozère region. This conservation effort helped protect and encourage the return of these endangered birds to the area.

The name refers to the vultures that inhabit the surrounding cliffs and play a vital role in this ecosystem. Visitors gain insight into how these birds function in their natural environment and why they matter locally.

The center sits along Gorges de la Jonte and is accessible by foot from various hiking trails in the area. It is wise to wear comfortable shoes as the terrain involves steep paths and cliff-side walking.

The facility operates hidden cameras mounted on nearby cliff faces that broadcast live footage of vulture colonies into an indoor viewing room. This setup lets visitors watch the birds even during poor weather and see details that the naked eye cannot capture from a distance.
