Grotte de la Salamandre, cavité touristique dans le Gard, en France
The Grotte de la Salamandre is a show cave in Saint-Privat-de-Champclos featuring limestone formations throughout its underground spaces. The accessible passages wind through multiple chambers with varied mineral deposits and natural rock formations.
Local woodcutters knew of the cave before it was formally documented in 1965 by spelunkers from the region. Public access was later established.
The cave hosts musical performances in summer months, with classical, baroque, and folk music taking advantage of the natural acoustics. The limestone chambers create exceptional sound conditions for these events.
The cave maintains a constant cool temperature inside, so warm clothing is recommended for comfort. The passages are well-lit and designed for safe walking.
Visitors can experience a 50-meter rappel descent to go deeper into the cave system. The Aeroplume system also allows suspended flight within the cavern.
