BEAUVOIR-COTE-DE-LUMIERE, Airfield in Beauvoir-sur-Mer, France
The aérodrome de Beauvoir is a small airfield in the town of Beauvoir-sur-Mer in western France. It has a runway of about 1,970 feet (600 meters), a few small hangars, and a basic reception building surrounded by flat open fields.
The club was founded in 1971 as the Aéro-Club de Bouin, using a small beach runway near the sea. When an aquaculture project threatened that site in 1982, two local towns joined together to build the current airfield, which opened in 1992.
The airfield bears the official name Aire Jacqueline Auriol, honoring the French test pilot Jacqueline Auriol. Her name is visible at the site entrance, reminding visitors of her place in French aviation history.
The site is most active on weekends, when club members fly and introductory flights are sometimes offered. It is worth contacting the Aéroclub Beauvoir-Fromentine in advance to make sure activities are taking place on the day you plan to visit.
From 1987, a helicopter company called OYA Hélicoptères operated flights from the site to the Île d'Yeu, an island off the coast. This link between a small airfield and an offshore island shows the practical role the site played in the region.
