Footbridge of Holzarte, Suspension bridge in Larrau, France.
The Holzarte footbridge spans 70 meters across the Olhadubi gorge at an elevation of 580 meters, providing dramatic views of the river flowing 150 meters below through a canyon carved over 80 million years ago in the limestone formations of the Pyrenees.
Built in 1920 by Italian workers from the Lombardi Morello steelworks, this suspension bridge was originally constructed to support logging operations by allowing workers to cross the challenging terrain and access timber sites on both sides of the deep canyon.
Located within Europe's largest beech forest, the bridge represents the integration of early 20th-century industrial engineering with environmental preservation, embodying the Basque tradition of harmonious coexistence between human activity and the mountain ecosystem.
Reaching the bridge requires a 1.5-hour hike from the Larrau parking area with an elevation gain of 183 meters, and visitors should wear proper hiking boots as the trail can become slippery, especially during wet conditions or early morning hours.
The bridge closes daily at 5:30 PM and offers hikers the experience of controlled vertigo as they walk across the swaying wooden planks suspended high above the gorge, creating an unforgettable sensation of floating between the canyon walls.
