Gargantua, Colossal statue in France

Gargantua was a colossal figure presented as a giant walkable head that formed one of the most striking parts of the defunct Mirapolis amusement park. Inside, a dark ride guided visitors through various scenes and spaces to create an immersive experience.

The statue opened on 20 May 1987 and symbolized one of the giant beings from French literary history. It remained part of the park until its final closure and now stands abandoned at its original location.

The statue references Gargantua, a famous character from Rabelais' works deeply rooted in French literature. Visitors could formerly experience the connection between this literary tradition and the modern artistic interpretation.

The site is visible from the A15 highway, making it easy to locate even though the park no longer operates. Expect challenging ground conditions and limited access since the area is currently unmaintained.

The interior of the statue was not merely decorative but functioned as a rideable attraction with scenarios guiding visitors through different themed sections. This combination of monumental external sculpture and active interior ride was an innovative concept for its era.
