Ébron Suspension Bridge, Suspension footbridge in Treffort and Lavars, France
The Ébron Suspension Bridge is a steel footbridge that stretches 180 meters across the Ébron River, linking the municipalities of Treffort and Lavars at varying heights between 45 and 85 meters. The structure uses metal cables and a supporting frame to safely carry pedestrians across the valley below.
The bridge was constructed in August 2007 as part of a network of Himalayan-style footbridges in the region. It was designed to connect the Trieves area with the Matheysine zone across Lake Monteynard-Avignonet.
The footbridge is woven into the hiking routes of the region, enabling visitors to cross between two municipalities while experiencing how locals have adapted their trails to the landscape. It serves as a meeting point where walkers from different areas can share paths through the mountains.
Reaching the footbridge requires a hike of about 4.5 hours from the La Mira parking area. During peak season, boat transfers are available to combine different trail options and reduce walking time if desired.
The structure incorporates a 17 percent slope across its span, built with steel cables measuring 51 millimeters in diameter, giving it a distinctive engineering character. Few visitors notice how these technical details shape the walking experience, making each crossing feel like a small engineering adventure.
