La Chaussée-Tirancourt oppidum

La Chaussée-Tirancourt oppidum is an ancient Celtic fortification spread across wide grounds between two valleys with massive earthwork defenses and a deep ditch system. The terrain displays remains of an entrance area and multiple watchtowers that once guarded the settlement.

This fortification emerged in the decades after the Gallic Wars ended, when the region came under Roman influence. Archaeological research revealed that the Celtic population continued to expand and reinforce their settlement during this transitional period.

This site served as a central gathering place for the local Celtic population who built their community defenses here. Visitors can walk through the remains and see how people of that time organized their settlement to protect themselves.

The grounds are expansive and require time to explore properly, so wear comfortable shoes and bring adequate water. This location sits in a hilly region with damp conditions, and some paths become slippery after rain.

Beneath the soil lie several hidden structures detectable only with specialized equipment, making the ancient settlement even more mysterious. These invisible traces suggest people occupied this location long before the fortification was built.
