Rouergue bridge, pont situé en France
The Rouergue bridge is a road bridge in La Réole that spans the Garonne River and connects the town center on the east side to the Rouergue district on the west. It is a metal suspension bridge approximately 168 meters long and 9 meters wide, with sidewalks along both sides for pedestrians.
The original 19th-century structure with stone or brick pylons was replaced in 1934 by the current metal suspension bridge, which opened in 1935. This modern design allowed for a wider and longer crossing of the river without many supports in the water.
The bridge is part of the Via Vezélay pilgrimage route, which connects to the Camino de Santiago and has drawn travelers for centuries. For local residents, it remains a familiar landmark that links different neighborhoods and holds a place in everyday life.
The bridge is currently closed to cars, bicycles, and pedestrians, particularly during cold weather when certain metal parts become fragile. Visitors must use alternative routes to cross the river until restoration work is completed.
The bridge displays engineering features from the 1930s, particularly with large metal cables that allowed the span across the wide Garonne without many supports. Studies are currently underway to fully restore the structure and possibly reopen it to pedestrians and cyclists.
