Fort Saint-Thierry, Military fortress near Pouillon, France

The triangular fortress covers 5 hectares and contains two-story barracks with 13 shelter traverses across its fortified perimeter.

Built between 1877 and 1880 as Fort Berbier de Metz, the structure became part of the Reims defense system and housed 500 soldiers.

The fort played a central role during World War I, changing hands between French and German forces through intense battles in 1914 and 1918.

The site requires sturdy walking shoes due to its forest location, deteriorated structures, and limited accessibility through woodland paths.

After the war, local villages salvaged stones from the left barracks section for their reconstruction, leading to the current partial state.

Location: Pouillon
