The Réduit de Chenay spans across 3 hectares and features a main barracks measuring 40 meters wide and 9 meters high on the Saint-Thierry massif.
Built between 1879 and 1884 as part of the Reims fortification belt, this defensive structure protected the southern flank of Fort Saint-Thierry.
The reduit stands as a representation of French military architecture from the late 19th century, demonstrating the period's defensive construction methods.
The structure contains six barracks rooms on the ground floor, four main rooms in the basement, and a 52-meter deep well for water supply.
During World War II, the United States military repurposed this French defensive fortification into a military prison for their operations.
