Bolnisi Sioni, Basilica in Bolnisi, Georgia.
Bolnisi Sioni is a three-nave basilica in the Kvemo Kartli region, positioned at an elevation of 624 meters. The structure combines classical Georgian building traditions with Persian artistic influences in its stonework.
The basilica was built between 478 and 493 AD under the supervision of Bishop David. It stands as the oldest surviving church in all of Georgia.
The church displays decorative carvings with curling vine patterns and interlaced ornaments that recall Persian artistic traditions. You can see these details especially on the southern side and central section of the exterior.
The building is regularly open to visitors and you can examine the early Georgian inscriptions carved into the stone walls. Clear markers help you navigate the site and notice the main architectural features.
The building has its completion date carved directly into the exterior walls, making it the first Georgian structure to display this information in such a permanent way. This detail is rarely seen on medieval structures across the region.
