Gori Fortress

Gori Fortress is a medieval stronghold built on a rocky hill with an oval stone structure and defensive walls towering several meters high. The site contains multiple entrances, the remains of covered walkways, and an ancient tunnel system that once carried water to the garrison.

Archaeological evidence suggests fortifications existed at this location from the first century BC, though the fortress first appears in written records during the 13th century. The structure has endured countless sieges and has been damaged and rebuilt repeatedly throughout its existence.

The fortress embodies the evolution of Georgian defensive architecture across multiple periods and construction styles. Visitors walking through the site can observe how building techniques changed over the centuries as each era left its mark on the structure.

The fortress is accessible on foot by following the path from the Georgian War Heroes Memorial in central Gori. The walk uphill takes roughly 15 minutes and provides expanding views of the town and surrounding landscape with each step.

The western section called Tskhrakara or Nine-Gates survives as the most intact portion of the site despite numerous sieges and earthquake damage. This area lets visitors see the original gate system with its layered defensive passages still standing today.
