Jvari, Orthodox monastery on Mount Jvari, Mtskheta, Georgia
The stone monastery stands at the junction of Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers, featuring a cross-shaped design with four apses and cylindrical niches.
Saint Nino erected a wooden cross at this location in the 4th century, leading to the construction of the current structure between 590 and 605.
The monastery walls display ancient Asomtavruli inscriptions, representing early examples of Georgian writing that document the construction process.
The monastery remains open daily from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM, offering free entry and requiring approximately two hours for a complete visit.
The structure maintains its original 6th-century architectural form, displaying a harmonious fusion of Hellenistic and Sassanian artistic elements.
