Timotesubani

Timotesubani is a monastery complex in Borjomi Municipality positioned at 1100 meters elevation with distinctive pink stone construction. The buildings feature a cross-in-square design with three-sided eastern apses that define the structure's layout and appearance.

Construction of the Church of the Dormition took place during Queen Tamar's reign from 1184 to 1213, a period of growth and strength for medieval Georgia. This era saw the kingdom develop important religious and defensive structures throughout the region.

The frescoes on the interior walls show religious scenes painted in the 1200s, revealing how Georgian artists of that era worked and what they valued. These paintings remain visible today and reflect the artistic traditions of the medieval period.

The monastery sits on a mountain slope and is reached by hiking or vehicle, with access depending on seasonal weather conditions. Wear proper footwear and be prepared for uneven ground, as paths are not fully paved throughout the complex.

The central dome rests on two independent pillars combined with altar ledges, showing an unusual medieval building solution. This design choice allowed builders to distribute weight while keeping the interior open for worship.
