Vashlovani Strict Nature Reserve, Nature reserve in Dedoplistsqaro Municipality, Georgia
Vashlovani Strict Nature Reserve is a protected area in Dedoplistsqaro region in eastern Georgia. The reserve contains plateau land with scattered forest patches, open steppe grassland, and deep gorges carved along its eastern border.
Authorities established this reserve in 1935 to protect rare plants and wildlife in eastern Georgia. This gave animal populations space to survive and prevented the disappearance of many species in this Caucasus border region.
The name Vashlovani refers to steppe and desert lands in the Georgian language. Visitors can see ancient herding routes and crumbling fortress ruins that reveal how people and livestock moved through this harsh region for hundreds of years.
The administrative center in Dedoplistsqaro is where visitors start and gather information about hiking routes. Day visits are possible, and overnight stays are available for those who want to explore the reserve more thoroughly.
An active mud volcano sits within the reserve and regularly ejects clay deposits. Certain sections feature sharp eagle gorges that visitors can cross on foot.
