Liakhvi Strict Nature Reserve

Liakhvi Strict Nature Reserve is a protected area spread across the southern slope of the Greater Caucasus, with mountain terrain, mixed woodlands, and river gorges. The landscape shifts between dense forests of oak, beech, and hornbeam trees, and open valleys carved by flowing water.

The area shows evidence of human settlement from prehistoric times and later became the site of early Christian buildings and fortifications. These layers reveal how the region was inhabited and shaped by different communities across thousands of years.

The gorge holds early Christian structures that mark religious and cultural changes across different periods. Walking through the area, visitors encounter stone buildings and ruins that reveal how people used this land over centuries.

The reserve sits at elevations ranging from 1,200 to 2,300 meters, creating different conditions depending on where you go. Visitors should prepare for varying weather and terrain difficulty as they move between lower and higher sections of the protected area.

Brown bears, golden eagles, and brown trout live within the reserve, making it home to wildlife that depends on both high forests and flowing waters. Few visitors realize how interconnected these animals are with the forest health and river systems here.
