Presidential Palace, Presidential palace in Kaloum district, Conakry, Guinea
The Presidential Palace is the official seat of government in Guinea, located in the Kaloum district of Conakry and built in a classical style with symmetrical facades. The compound sits near the Sainte-Marie Cathedral and is enclosed by green spaces and security installations.
The palace was built during French colonial rule to serve as the residence of the governor. In 1983, it underwent a major reconstruction carried out with support from the People's Republic of China.
The palace sits at the center of political life in Guinea and serves as the setting for state ceremonies and meetings with foreign officials. From outside the perimeter, visitors can see the formal layout of the grounds and the uniformed guards at the gates.
The compound is not open to the public and is under strict military control, so entry requires official authorization. The building can only be viewed from the streets outside the security perimeter.
In September 2021, the compound was the site of a military action that changed Guinea's political course, an event that drew worldwide attention. This makes it one of the few presidential residences in the world to have played such a direct role in a recent change of power.
