Grand Mosque of Conakry, Islamic center in Conakry, Guinea

The Grand Mosque of Conakry is a prayer house with four minarets topped in light blue and five domes, with one larger central dome that rises above the rest of the structure. The interior is designed with separate levels to accommodate worshippers, with open spaces that allow light to filter through.

King Fahd of Saudi Arabia funded the construction of this mosque in 1982, during the presidency of Ahmed Sékou Touré, Guinea's first leader. The project arose from the desire to create a large prayer house for the city's expanding Muslim population.

The mosque sits within gardens that hold mausoleums of significant historical figures, making it a place where people come to remember and honor important leaders from Guinea's past. These burial sites attract visitors seeking to pay their respects.

The grounds in front of the mosque are open and easy to access, making it straightforward to see the exterior and take photographs. Visitors should remember this is an active place of worship, so it helps to be mindful of prayer times when planning your visit.

In 2009, the esplanade became the site of a memorial gathering when 58 people who lost their lives in a national tragedy were brought there to be honored. This moment turned the space into a symbol of remembrance for the nation.
