Ano Koufonisi, Island group in the Cyclades, Greece
Koufonissia is a small group of islands in the Cyclades, located in the Aegean Sea between Naxos and Amorgos. It consists of two islands: Ano Koufonissi, which is the inhabited one with a port, a village, restaurants and places to stay, and Kato Koufonissi, which is uninhabited and reachable only by boat.
Koufonissia was for a long time a modest fishing settlement with little outside attention, inhabited by a small community dependent on the sea. Tourism only began to develop in the late 20th century, slowly changing the rhythm of life on the island.
In Chora, the only village on the island, whitewashed houses line narrow cobblestone streets that lead down toward the water. Fishing is at the heart of daily life here, and the harbor reflects that with its constant coming and going of boats.
The only way to reach Koufonissia is by ferry, as there is no airport on the island. Once there, walking or renting a bike are the most practical ways to get around, since the island is small enough to cover on foot.
Kato Koufonissi has no permanent residents, yet the island has small taverns that open only in summer to serve day visitors with fresh fish. Along its coastline there are also sea caves that can only be explored by boat.
