Ilioupoli is a residential suburb in southeastern Athens located at the western foot of Hymettus mountain. The area is defined by concentric circular streets that connect eleven distinct neighborhoods in an organized pattern.
The area was established in 1924 by Greek refugees from Asia Minor who arrived after population exchanges following the Greco-Turkish War. These settlers shaped the early development and structure of the suburb from its beginning.
The suburb maintains active relationships with international cities including Novi Sad in Serbia and Larnaca in Cyprus through municipal exchange programs.
