Axios-Loudias-Aliakmonas Delta National Park

The Axios-Loudias-Aliakmonas Delta National Park is a protected area along Thermaikos Gulf that encompasses multiple river deltas and shallow water bodies. The landscape is defined by reed and marsh vegetation, interspersed with lagoons that lie between the river channels.

The area was designated as a national park in 1971 to protect natural habitats that have been inhabited since ancient times. The river deltas attracted people who built their livelihoods around farming and fishing in these waters.

Local communities have shaped this area through generations of mussel farming, a practice that remains central to their way of life. This traditional work has created a deep connection between people and the wetland environment that visitors can still observe today.

The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon when wildlife watchers and nature enthusiasts are most active in the field. Bring binoculars, sturdy footwear, and insect protection, as paths lead through wet and flat terrain.

The park is home to one of Greece's largest herds of water buffalo, a legacy of longstanding agricultural practices. These large dark-brown animals are easy to spot along the shorelines and in the shallow waters, revealing the deep bond between livestock and landscape.
