Paliani monastery

Paliani monastery is a religious community south of Heraklion that contains a three-aisled basilica dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The complex blends architectural features from different periods and includes a museum displaying icons and sacred objects.

The monastery was founded in the 6th century and later came under the control of the Latin Archbishop of Crete despite opposition from Constantinople. This period left lasting marks on both the building and its institutional history.

The nuns display their handwoven textiles in an ongoing exhibition, keeping alive a long tradition of religious craftsmanship within the monastery. Walking through, you can observe how these works remain central to daily monastic practice.

The monastery sits south of Heraklion and is manageable to explore on foot given its compact layout. Visitors should dress respectfully since this remains an active religious community.

Behind the main temple grows a myrtle tree estimated to be around 1800 years old, with leaves traditionally harvested for healing remedies and religious rituals. Most visitors pass by without noticing this living monument to the site's continuous practice.
