Helsinki Airport, International airport in Vantaa, Finland
Helsinki Airport is an international hub in Vantaa, located about 17 kilometers (11 miles) north of downtown Helsinki. The facility spreads over 1,800 hectares (4,400 acres) and has three asphalt runways along with two passenger terminals joined under one roof.
The airport opened in July 1952 to receive travelers for the Helsinki Summer Olympics. Over the following decades the facility underwent several rounds of expansion to handle growing international traffic.
The name derives from the forests that covered the area before construction and still surround parts of the grounds today. In the waiting areas you find large windows and pale surfaces that capture the limited daylight of the winter season.
The terminals are well signposted and offer short walks between check-in, security, and gates. Wheelchair-accessible facilities and clear signage help with orientation in any weather.
Specialized vehicles and heated runway sections keep operations running even at temperatures down to minus 30 degrees Celsius (minus 22 degrees Fahrenheit). This equipment allows year-round flight connections without major weather-related delays.
