Sammallahdenmäki

Sammallahdenmäki is a prehistoric burial site containing approximately 36 stone mounds scattered across a hilltop, forming one of Finland's largest ancient cemeteries. The graves date from the Bronze Age and display varying shapes and sizes.

The burial mounds were built between the 15th and 6th centuries before Christ by regional inhabitants. They serve as crucial evidence for understanding funeral customs and living conditions during the Bronze Age in northern Europe.

The mounds reveal how the people of this region honored their dead and what rituals mattered to them. Visitors can observe how the stone arrangements show that this community was organized and thoughtful in its practices.

The site has marked walking trails connecting the mounds and helping visitors navigate the area. Information boards explain the structures, and it is best to wear sturdy shoes and weatherproof clothing as the ground is uneven.

Among the typically round burial mounds stands a rectangular structure called Kirkonlaattia that clearly differs from the others. This unusual shape indicates that different burial practices existed side by side at this cemetery.
