Ainola, Artist's villa and museum in Järvenpää, Finland
Ainola is a two-story wooden house built in Art Nouveau style, designed by architect Lars Sonck and situated on the lakeshore. The building features elegant rooms, a green tiled stove, and lake views that remain intact today.
The composer Jean Sibelius moved into the house in 1904 and lived there with his family until the end of his life. The building was placed under state protection and transferred to the Finnish government by his daughters in 1972.
The house stands at the heart of the Lake Tuusula Artist Community, where many creative families settled starting in the early 1900s. The rooms show how artists lived and interacted with one another during that time.
A visit requires patience during bad weather, as the rooms are small and can fill quickly. Coming early in the day helps you explore the collection without crowds.
Apple trees grow in the garden where both Sibelius and his wife Aino are buried. This quiet corner of nature reflects the composer's deep love for his rural home.
