Western Finland Province, Province in Finland
Western Finland Province was an administrative region covering the southwestern part of the country, stretching from the coast to inland areas with lakes and forests. It included seven distinct geographic and administrative regions with varied landscapes and multiple urban centers.
The province was established in 1997 through the merger of several administrative districts spanning different parts of southwestern Finland. It was dissolved in 2009 when Finland restructured its administrative system and eliminated provincial governance.
The province maintained both Finnish and Swedish speaking populations, with universities in Turku, Tampere, and Jyväskylä contributing to educational development.
The province operated through multiple administrative offices located in Turku, Jyväskylä, Tampere, Vaasa, and Pori, with staff distributed across different departments. Visitors exploring this former region can access the various urban centers independently, as they are connected by road and rail networks.
The province contained 142 municipalities until its dissolution in 2009, when Finland reformed its administrative structure and eliminated the provincial system.
